BRIGHTON, Colo. – The 27J Schools Board of Education approved the charter application for Ascent Classical Academy of 27J in a unanimous vote held Tuesday, Sept. 27, during its regular board meeting.

The Board’s approval of Ascent Classical’s application included four conditions and started the 90-day negotiation window for agreeing to terms for an authorization contract. Among these conditions included the requirement for an independent, local governing board – a condition the 27J Board states is necessary to uphold local control over the new school. Ascent Classical Academy Charter Schools operates its Colorado campuses with a district board centrally located in the Denver metropolitan area.

“Local control is really about parent involvement, and our organization has always been and will continue to be committed to a strong partnership with parents. We have worked alongside an incredible group of advocates to bring this successful academic model to the 27J community,” said Kim Gilmartin, director of new school development and outreach for Ascent Classical Academies.

A district board allows Ascent Classical to maintain the highest quality in academic implementation and operational support across its network of tuition-free charter schools. The network includes open campuses in Lone Tree and Windsor, Colorado, as well as a new campus for Grand Junction opening in Fall 2023.

The 27J school is planned to open in the fall of 2023 with a campus location that has yet to be announced. The enrollment lottery will be held in early spring and includes a weighted priority for free-and-reduced lunch-eligible or indigenous students.
